On Aug. 28, California announced a blueprint (Blueprint for a Safer Economy) for reducing COVID-19 in the state with revised criteria for loosening and tightening restrictions on activities.
Every county in California is assigned to a tier based on its rate of new cases and positivity percentage. The new system contains four tiers: purple (widespread risk level), red (substantial risk level), orange (moderate risk level), and yellow (minimal risk level).
San Diego County is currently in the red tier. According to the state, counties must remain in a tier for at least three weeks before moving forward. Data will be reviewed weekly, and tiers will be updated on Tuesdays. To move forward, a county must meet the next tier’s criteria for two consecutive weeks. If a county’s metrics worsen for two consecutive weeks, it will be assigned a more restrictive tier.
Since the county has been in the red tier for more than two weeks, schools are permitted to reopen. Districts throughout the county continue to work in consultation with SDCOE and local public health officials to operate reopened school, collaborate on distance learning and hybrid models, and prepare school facilities for reopening.
